What a Class A licence lets you pull

A Class A covers any combination over 26,001 lb gross combination weight rating where the trailer alone is rated above 10,000 lb — which is every tractor-trailer on the road. It is the widest licence in trucking, and it is why the list below runs from dry van through to oversize.

What can you drive with a CDL-A?

A Class A CDL covers any combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, where the towed unit is rated over 10,000 pounds. In practice that is a tractor-trailer: dry van, refrigerated, flatbed, step deck, tanker, car hauler, intermodal and oversize equipment all fall under it. A Class A also lets you operate most Class B and Class C vehicles, which is why it is the licence with the widest range of work behind it.

How much experience do you need for a CDL-A driving job?

Most of the openings on this page ask for twelve months of verifiable tractor-trailer experience, because that is what our client carriers' insurers require. Some specialty freight — oversize, car haul — asks for more. If you have a Class A and less than a year behind the wheel, the route in is usually a carrier training programme or a dry van account, and it is worth calling us rather than filtering yourself out: we know which accounts take newer drivers.

Which CDL-A trailer type pays the most?

Across the openings listed here, oversize and heavy haul sit at the top, followed by car haul, hazmat and tanker, then step deck and flatbed, with dry van at the base. The pattern is consistent: pay tracks the skill and the physical work involved in loading and securing freight, not the miles. Flatbed and step deck pay more than dry van because you are chaining, strapping and tarping; tanker and hazmat pay more because of the endorsements and the risk.

Do I need endorsements for these jobs?

Only for some. Tanker work needs the N endorsement and hazmat needs H, or X for both together. Dry van, reefer, flatbed, step deck, car haul, intermodal and power-only need no endorsement beyond the Class A itself. Doubles/triples (T) opens up some LTL linehaul work. If a posting requires an endorsement it says so in its requirements list.

Do not have a Class A yet?

Class B work is home daily and needs a shorter course, and hotshot hauling under 26,001 lb needs no CDL at all. Both are real routes into the industry, and both count as commercial driving experience when you upgrade later.
