Where the line between Class B and Class A actually falls

A Class B covers a single vehicle rated at 26,001 lb or more, towing a trailer rated no higher than 10,000 lb. The vehicle can be very large — a loaded mixer or a tri-axle dump truck is Class B work. What pushes a job into Class A is the trailer's rating, not the size of the truck pulling it.

What can you drive with a CDL-B?

A Class B CDL covers a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more, and that vehicle may tow a trailer rated up to 10,000 pounds. That means straight trucks, box trucks over the weight threshold, dump trucks, cement mixers, garbage trucks, buses and most delivery vehicles. What it does not cover is a tractor pulling a loaded semi-trailer — that is Class A. The dividing line is the trailer's rating, not the total size of the vehicle.

Is a CDL-B job worth it if I could get a CDL-A?

It depends on what you want from the week rather than from the year. Class A tractor-trailer work generally pays more per year, and it is usually over-the-road. Class B work is overwhelmingly local: home every night, a route you know, and a start time you can plan a life around. Drivers who want daily home time often take the pay difference deliberately. Many Class B drivers also upgrade to Class A later, and the Class B time counts as commercial driving experience when they do.

How much do CDL-B drivers make?

The openings on this page run roughly from the low forties to the mid seventies annually, depending on the state and the equipment. Dump truck and cement mixer work sits at the upper end and is often seasonal, tracking construction. Box truck and straight truck delivery sits lower but runs year round and is the most predictable schedule of the three. Every posting here lists its own band for its own state.

Do CDL-B jobs need endorsements?

Usually not. The common Class B roles listed here — box truck, straight truck, dump truck, cement mixer — need no endorsement beyond the licence. You would need the air brake restriction removed to drive most of this equipment, which is done by testing in a vehicle with air brakes. Passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsements matter for bus work, and tanker (N) applies if you are hauling liquid in a permanently mounted tank.

Can I apply with a Class A licence for these jobs?

Yes. A Class A covers every vehicle a Class B covers, so a Class A holder can take any opening on this page. Drivers do this when they want to come off the road for a while without giving up commercial driving. Tell the recruiter which licence you hold — it widens rather than narrows what we can put in front of you.

Thinking about upgrading to Class A?

Time in a Class B seat counts as commercial driving experience, which is the thing most Class A accounts screen for. Plenty of drivers run local for a year, upgrade, and go straight onto a good account instead of a starter one.
