Truck Parking Guide
The truck parking shortage is real. Here is how to find safe, legal parking across America without wasting hours and fuel.
The Truck Parking Crisis
Every night in America, thousands of truck drivers circle parking lots, drive past full rest areas, and park on highway shoulders because there is simply nowhere legal to stop. The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) consistently ranks truck parking as a top-3 concern for drivers. The FHWA estimates a shortage of 40,000 to 100,000 parking spaces nationwide.
ELD mandates have made the problem worse. Before electronic logging, drivers had flexibility to push through to find parking. Now, when the clock hits zero, you must stop, whether or not a parking spot exists. This has turned parking from an inconvenience into a safety and compliance crisis.

Rest Area Rules by Region
Rest area policies vary significantly by state. Here is a general guide:
Northeast (I-95 Corridor)
Most restrictive. Many states limit truck parking to 2-4 hours. Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York have limited rest areas with strict time limits. Expect to pay for parking at private lots.
Southeast
Generally more permissive. Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas allow overnight at most rest areas. Virginia has good welcome center parking. Tennessee rest areas are truck-friendly.
Midwest
Good rest area availability along I-80, I-70, I-90. Iowa, Ohio, and Indiana have generous parking. Illinois has closed many rest areas in recent years.
Texas & South Central
Texas rest areas are large and generally allow overnight parking. Oklahoma and Louisiana have decent rest area networks along major interstates.
West Coast
California rest areas fill up fast and have varying time limits. Oregon and Washington have limited truck-specific parking. Plan ahead in this region.
Mountain West
Large distances between stops. Wyoming, Montana, and Utah have wide-open rest areas but fewer truck stops. Always plan fuel stops carefully.
Practical Tips From Experienced Drivers
- Stop early. If you know parking is tight in your area, stop at 4-5 PM rather than pushing to 8-9 PM. The cost of stopping an hour early is far less than 90 minutes of circling.
- Plan 2-3 parking options. Before each day, identify your primary, backup, and emergency parking spots along your route. Apps and satellite view make this easy.
- Use reserved parking for critical nights. On routes through the Northeast or near major metros, the $15-20 for reserved parking is worth it.
- Build a mental database. Experienced drivers know their favorite spots on every route. Over time, you will too. Take notes on what works.
- Never park on the shoulder. Shoulder parking is dangerous (drivers get hit by drowsy motorists) and often illegal. If you cannot find a spot, exit the interstate and find a safe lot.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Why is truck parking so hard to find?
- The U.S. has a shortage of approximately 40,000-100,000 truck parking spaces depending on the estimate. Freight volumes have grown faster than parking infrastructure. E-commerce growth means more trucks on the road, ELD mandates mean drivers must stop when their clock runs out (no more flexibility to keep driving), and NIMBYism makes building new truck stops politically difficult. The problem is worst in the Northeast corridor, I-95 corridor, and near major metros.
- What are the best apps for finding truck parking?
- The most popular truck parking apps are Trucker Path (largest community with real-time updates from drivers), TruckPark (reserved parking at truck stops), Park My Truck (real-time availability at participating lots), and the Pilot Flying J and Love's apps (show availability at their own locations). Many drivers also use Google Maps satellite view to scout rest areas and large parking lots in advance.
- Can you park a semi truck at Walmart?
- Some Walmart locations allow overnight truck parking, but policies vary by store and local ordinance. Always ask the store manager before parking overnight. Walmart's corporate policy defers to individual store managers. Look for existing truck tire marks and other parked semis as indicators. Never block fire lanes, entrances, or customer parking areas. This should be a backup option, not a primary parking strategy.
- How much does reserved truck parking cost?
- Reserved truck parking typically costs $12-$25 per night at major truck stop chains. TruckPark and similar services allow advance reservations. While this adds cost, it eliminates the stress and wasted fuel of circling for hours looking for a spot. Many drivers consider it worthwhile for high-demand areas like the I-95 corridor, Chicago area, and major metro approaches.
- Are rest areas safe for overnight parking?
- State-operated rest areas are generally safe and many allow overnight parking, though time limits vary by state (typically 2-8 hours, some allow overnight). Security varies widely. Rest areas on major interstates near metro areas tend to be better maintained and patrolled. Always lock your doors, park in well-lit areas, and be aware of your surroundings. Some states have closed rest areas due to budget cuts, so check availability in advance.
