Job Description
We are hiring local intermodal and drayage drivers to transport shipping containers between rail yards, port terminals, warehouses, and distribution centers. This is a home-daily position — you will start and end each shift at the same terminal and sleep in your own bed every night. If you are tired of being out on the road for weeks at a time, intermodal drayage offers OTR-level pay with a local driver's quality of life.
Your typical day involves picking up a 20-foot or 40-foot container from a rail ramp (BNSF, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, CSX), delivering it to a consignee's warehouse, and either waiting for a live unload or dropping the chassis and picking up an outbound container. You will usually run 3 to 5 loads per day within a 100-mile radius of your home terminal. The work is fast-paced and physical — you will be hooking and unhooking chassis, adjusting landing gear, and dealing with congested rail yard and port traffic.
Intermodal drayage pays $65,000 to $80,000 annually with most drivers earning on a per-load or percentage basis. The more loads you move, the more you make. Peak season (August through November) brings the highest volume and earning potential. We need drivers in major intermodal markets — Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Memphis, Kansas City, and other rail hub cities.
Requirements
- Valid CDL-A license
- Minimum 6 months of verifiable CDL-A experience
- Intermodal or drayage experience preferred but not required
- TWIC card required for port access (or willingness to obtain one)
- Clean MVR — no major violations in the past 3 years
- Current DOT medical card
- Ability to work in fast-paced rail yard and port environments
- Must be at least 21 years old
