Hotshot Driver — Regional
TruckingJobsInUSA
Job Description
We are hiring hotshot drivers for time-sensitive regional freight using Class 3, 4, or 5 trucks with gooseneck or bumper-pull trailers. Hotshot trucking fills a critical niche — loads that are too big for a pickup truck but too small or too urgent for a full-size semi. You will be hauling oilfield equipment, construction materials, machinery parts, agricultural equipment, and other freight that needs to get there fast.
Hotshot loads typically weigh between 5,000 and 16,500 pounds and ride on 30-foot to 40-foot flatbed gooseneck trailers. You will handle your own securement using straps, chains, and binders just like flatbed trucking but on a smaller scale. Many hotshot loads are expedited — customers pay a premium because they need the freight delivered within hours or overnight. Oilfield work in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and North Dakota is a major source of hotshot freight.
Depending on the truck's GVWR and the trailer combination, you may or may not need a CDL. Combinations under 26,001 pounds GVWR can be operated with a standard license, while heavier setups require a CDL-A. Annual earnings range from $50,000 to $75,000 depending on your region, load volume, and whether you are running as a company driver or owner-operator. This is a great fit for drivers who want independence and variety without committing to full OTR schedules.
Requirements
- CDL-A license required for GVWR over 26,001 lbs; standard Class D license accepted for lighter combinations
- Minimum 1 year of driving experience (commercial or hotshot)
- Flatbed securement skills — ability to strap and chain loads
- Clean driving record — no major violations in the past 3 years
- Current DOT medical card (required for vehicles over 10,001 lbs GVWR)
- Own reliable truck preferred for owner-operator positions (company trucks available for company drivers)
- Flexible schedule — some loads require overnight or weekend delivery
- Basic mechanical knowledge for on-road troubleshooting
Benefits
- Annual earnings: $50,000 - $75,000
- Home most weekends on regional routes
- Percentage pay per load — high-value expedited freight pays premium rates
- Flexible scheduling — choose loads that fit your availability
- Lower startup costs than full semi truck operations
- Medical and dental insurance for company driver positions
- Weekly direct deposit
- Growing demand in oilfield, construction, and agricultural markets
