XPO Overview
XPO is one of the largest less-than-truckload (LTL) carriers in North America, operating over 13,000 tractors through a network of approximately 600 terminals. Headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut, XPO was formerly known as XPO Logistics before separating its contract logistics business into GXO Logistics in 2021. The company focuses exclusively on LTL freight transportation.
XPO offers drivers something that most OTR carriers cannot: home daily positions with hourly pay and overtime opportunities. LTL drivers at XPO work city (pickup and delivery) or linehaul (terminal-to-terminal) routes. City drivers pick up and deliver freight to businesses within a metro area, while linehaul drivers move trailers between terminals, often overnight. Both positions typically get drivers home daily.
The company has invested significantly in technology and automation at their terminals, and XPO is known for competitive LTL pay with strong hourly rates. The union presence at many XPO terminals means some drivers have additional protections and negotiated wage scales. XPO has been expanding aggressively, opening new terminals and hiring in many markets.

Home Time Policy
Nearly all XPO driving positions are home daily. City drivers work day shifts picking up and delivering freight within a metro area. Linehaul drivers work overnight or early morning shifts running trailers between terminals but return home at the end of their shift. Some long-haul linehaul runs may require an overnight stay, but these are the exception.
Training Program
XPO does not operate a CDL training school. They require a minimum of 1 year CDL-A experience. New hires go through a company orientation and are trained on LTL-specific operations including dock procedures, freight handling, and route management. Some terminals offer dock-to-driver career paths where dockworkers can earn their CDL and transition to driving.
