Knight-Swift Transportation Overview

Knight-Swift Transportation is the largest full truckload carrier in North America, formed by the 2017 merger of Knight Transportation and Swift Transportation. Headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, the combined company operates over 18,000 trucks and employs more than 25,000 drivers. Knight-Swift is publicly traded on the NYSE and generates over $7 billion in annual revenue.

The Swift side of the business is one of the most well-known names in trucking, famous (and sometimes infamous) for being the industry's largest training carrier. The Swift Academy has trained hundreds of thousands of new CDL drivers over the decades. The Knight side has historically been more selective, offering higher pay but requiring more experience. Since the merger, the company has worked to standardize operations while maintaining some division-specific differences.

Knight-Swift operates dry van, refrigerated, dedicated, and intermodal divisions. The company has faced scrutiny over the years regarding its lease purchase programs and starting pay for new Swift Academy graduates, but it remains one of the most common entry points into the trucking industry for drivers with no experience.

Home Time Policy

Home time varies significantly between Knight and Swift divisions. Swift OTR drivers can expect home time every 2-3 weeks. Swift Regional drivers get home weekly. Knight divisions often offer better home time due to shorter haul lanes. Dedicated drivers on both sides have predictable schedules based on customer contracts. The inconsistency in home time is a common complaint, particularly for new Swift drivers.

Training Program

Swift Academy is one of the oldest and largest CDL training programs in the trucking industry. The program provides CDL training at no upfront cost in exchange for a 1-year employment commitment. Training includes classroom, range, and over-the-road instruction. After graduating, new drivers are paired with a mentor for approximately 4 weeks of team driving before going solo. The quality of mentors varies — this is a frequent complaint among graduates.

Knight-Swift Transportation FAQs

Is Swift Transportation the same as Knight-Swift?
Swift Transportation merged with Knight Transportation in 2017 to form Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings. Swift still operates as a brand within the company, with the Swift Academy and Swift-branded trucks still on the road. The Knight side operates somewhat independently with different pay scales and hiring standards. When applying, you may be directed to either the Knight or Swift side depending on your experience level.
How much does Swift pay new CDL graduates?
New Swift Academy graduates typically start around $0.42-$0.46 per mile, which translates to roughly $45,000-$55,000 in the first year. This is on the lower end for mega carriers, but Swift argues the free CDL training and guaranteed employment offset the lower starting wage. Pay increases are available at 6 and 12 months, and experienced Swift drivers can earn $0.55-$0.60+ CPM.
What is the difference between Knight and Swift divisions?
Knight divisions generally require more experience (1+ year CDL-A) but pay higher rates ($0.52-$0.60+ CPM). Swift divisions accept new graduates but start at lower pay ($0.42-$0.46 CPM). Knight trucks tend to be newer and routes tend to be shorter-haul. Both sides share corporate benefits and 401(k) plans. Many drivers start on the Swift side and transfer to Knight after gaining experience.
Should I do the Swift lease purchase program?
Most driver advocates and experienced drivers advise extreme caution with Swift's lease purchase program. The terms typically require high weekly payments regardless of freight volume, and drivers who leave the program early may face penalties. It is generally recommended that new drivers drive as a company driver for at least 2-3 years before considering any lease purchase, and when they do, to compare multiple programs rather than defaulting to their current carrier's offering.
How long is the Swift Academy training program?
Swift Academy typically takes 3-4 weeks for the initial CDL training and testing phase. After obtaining your CDL, you spend approximately 4 weeks with a mentor driver doing over-the-road team driving. Total time from start to solo driving is usually 7-8 weeks. You are paid during the mentor phase but at a reduced rate. The service commitment is approximately 1 year after completing training.
