New Jersey-Specific CDL Notes
New Jersey MVC requires CDL testing at designated MVC agencies with strict scheduling requirements. The state has additional regulations for commercial vehicles in the Port Authority region, including restricted routes, bridge/tunnel height limits, and toll requirements. New Jersey's dense population and proximity to the Port of Newark/Elizabeth make it a prime CDL job market.
CDL FAQ for New Jersey
How much does a CDL cost in New Jersey?
New Jersey CDL fees total approximately $228-$280, including a $54 application fee, $20 knowledge test fee, $100 skills test fee, and $54 CDL issuance fee. Training programs are also above the national average due to the high cost of living.
What is the six-point ID verification in New Jersey?
New Jersey MVC uses a six-point identity verification system for all license applications, including CDLs. You must present documents totaling at least 6 points from approved categories (primary ID, secondary ID, proof of address, SSN).
Are there restricted truck routes in New Jersey?
Yes. New Jersey has numerous restricted truck routes including the Garden State Parkway (commercial vehicles prohibited), certain bridge and tunnel restrictions in the Port Authority region, and low-clearance areas. CDL drivers must know these restrictions.
Is the Port of Newark good for CDL jobs?
Excellent. The Port of Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal is the largest container port on the East Coast, generating thousands of drayage, container hauling, and intermodal CDL jobs. The surrounding warehouse district is the densest in the nation.
How long is a New Jersey CDL valid?
A New Jersey CDL is valid for 4 years. The shorter renewal period means more frequent visits to the MVC and renewal fees, but ensures more regular medical and driving record reviews.
