Hawaii-Specific CDL Notes

Hawaii is unique in requiring a minimum age of 21 for all CDL classes (no intrastate exception for 18-20 year olds). CDL fees are the lowest in the nation. Testing is available on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. Due to Hawaii's island geography, all commercial driving is technically intrastate, but the 21-age minimum still applies.

CDL FAQ for Hawaii

How much does a CDL cost in Hawaii?

Hawaii has the lowest CDL fees in the nation, totaling approximately $20-$40. The $5 application fee, $3 knowledge test fee, $7 skills test fee, and $5 CDL issuance fee are remarkably affordable. However, training programs are more expensive due to limited options.

Why is the minimum CDL age 21 in Hawaii?

Hawaii does not offer the intrastate CDL exception that most other states provide for 18-20 year olds. The minimum age for all CDL classes in Hawaii is 21, regardless of whether you plan to drive commercially within the state.

Is there a Doubles/Triples endorsement in Hawaii?

The Doubles/Triples endorsement has very limited applicability in Hawaii due to the state's island geography and road infrastructure. Most Hawaii CDL jobs involve single vehicles, port drayage, and construction equipment.

What CDL jobs are available in Hawaii?

Hawaii CDL jobs include port drayage in Honolulu, construction hauling, fuel delivery, military logistics (multiple bases), refuse collection, and tour bus operations. Pay is typically higher than mainland to offset the high cost of living.

Can I use a mainland CDL in Hawaii?

Yes, but if you become a Hawaii resident, you must transfer your CDL to Hawaii within 90 days. You'll need to pass a vision screening and provide proof of residency. Knowledge and skills tests are typically waived for transfers from other states.
