Hazardous Materials (HazMat) for No Experience / Student Drivers
The HazMat endorsement authorizes you to transport hazardous materials as defined in 49 CFR 383.5. This includes chemicals, fuels, explosives, radioactive materials, compressed gases, and any cargo requiring hazmat placards.
You are either fresh out of CDL school, currently in a training program, or considering a career change into trucking. Many mega-carriers offer paid training programs that require no prior experience. This is the starting point for most professional truck drivers.

FAQ
Can no experience / student drivers get the Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement?
Yes, no experience / student drivers can add the H endorsement to their CDL. You'll need to pass a TSA background check (4-6 weeks). However, most carriers prefer at least 6-12 months of experience before assigning hazardous materials (hazmat) loads.
How much more do hazardous materials (hazmat) drivers with 0-6 months experience earn?
The H endorsement adds +$5,000 - $15,000/year to your base pay. Combined with 0-6 months of driving experience, you can expect to earn at the higher end of that range.
Is the H endorsement worth it for no experience / student drivers?
Getting the endorsement early is a smart career move — it opens doors even if you don't haul hazardous materials (hazmat) immediately. The investment is under $200 and the ROI is significant.
