What Are CDL Endorsements?

CDL endorsements are additional certifications added to your Commercial Driver's License that authorize you to operate specific types of vehicles or haul certain types of cargo. Endorsements can significantly increase your earning potential and job opportunities.

Hazmat (H) Endorsement

What it allows: Transport hazardous materials including explosives, flammable liquids, gases, and radioactive materials.

Requirements:

  • Pass written hazmat knowledge test
  • TSA background check and fingerprinting
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident
  • Renewal every 5 years

Pay increase: +$5,000-$15,000/year

Tanker (N) Endorsement

What it allows: Drive tank vehicles designed to transport liquid or gaseous materials.

Requirements:

  • Valid CDL Class A, B, or C
  • Pass tanker knowledge test
  • Understand liquid surge and weight distribution

Pay increase: +$3,000-$10,000/year

Doubles/Triples (T) Endorsement

What it allows: Pull double or triple trailers (where state laws permit).

Requirements:

  • Valid CDL Class A
  • Pass doubles/triples knowledge test
  • Training on coupling/uncoupling

Pay increase: +$2,000-$8,000/year

Passenger (P) Endorsement

What it allows: Operate vehicles designed to transport 16+ passengers.

Requirements:

  • Valid CDL
  • Pass passenger knowledge test
  • Pass skills test in passenger vehicle
  • Background check may be required

School Bus (S) Endorsement

What it allows: Operate school buses transporting students.

  • Valid CDL with P endorsement

Tank + Hazmat (X) Endorsement

What it allows: Combination of both tanker and hazmat - haul hazardous materials in tank vehicles.
