Choosing the wrong trucking company can cost you thousands in lost income, leave you stranded far from home, or trap you in a predatory lease-purchase agreement. After hearing from hundreds of drivers, these are the 15 biggest red flags to watch for before signing with any carrier.

Financial Red Flags

1. Vague pay structure. If a recruiter can't clearly explain cents-per-mile, accessorial pay, and detention rates, walk away. Legitimate companies have transparent pay breakdowns.

2. Mandatory lease-purchase programs. Many lease-purchase agreements are structured so drivers never actually own the truck. Monthly payments, maintenance escrow, and insurance deductions leave drivers netting less than company drivers. According to FMCSA data, a significant number of lease-purchase drivers exit within 18 months.

3. Excessive deductions from settlement. If your projected settlement shows deductions for fuel cards, ELD fees, trailer usage, and insurance that eat more than 35% of gross, the math probably doesn't work.

Operational Red Flags

4. Forced dispatch. Companies that give you zero say in load selection and penalize you for refusing loads are prioritizing their bottom line over your well-being and safety.

5. Consistent detention without pay. If drivers regularly wait 4-6 hours at shippers with no detention pay, the company either can't negotiate or doesn't care about your time.

6. High driver turnover. Annual turnover above 80% (check ATA reports) indicates systemic problems. Ask current drivers directly — not the recruiter's handpicked references.

Safety and Compliance Red Flags

7. Pressure to violate HOS. Any company that hints you should "find creative ways" to manage your hours is asking you to risk your CDL and your life. See our HOS guide for your rights.

8. Poor CSA scores. Check the company's safety record on FMCSA's SAFER system. Scores above the national average in vehicle maintenance or driver fitness categories indicate systemic issues.

9. Aging fleet. If the average truck age exceeds 5 years and drivers report frequent breakdowns, you'll spend unpaid time in repair shops instead of earning miles.

Culture Red Flags

10. Unreachable dispatch. If you can't get dispatch on the phone within 30 minutes, you'll be sitting empty waiting for loads while your paycheck shrinks.

11. No home time guarantees. "We'll try to get you home" is very different from "guaranteed home time every X days." Get it in writing.

12. Recruiter won't connect you with current drivers. Good companies are proud of their drivers' experience and will happily connect you.

13. Negative reviews across multiple platforms. Check Indeed, Glassdoor, CDLLife, and TruckersReport. One negative review might be a disgruntled employee; 50 consistent complaints indicate real problems.

14. Training bond/contract with harsh penalties. Some companies charge $5,000-$10,000 if you leave before the contract period. Legitimate training contracts exist but shouldn't be punitive.

15. No benefits after 60 days. If health insurance, 401(k), and paid time off aren't available within the first 90 days, the company isn't investing in long-term drivers. Browse our best companies for carriers that treat drivers right.
