Truck driving is one of the most sedentary occupations in America, and the health statistics reflect it — higher rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and sleep apnea compared to the general population. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Exercise Without a Gym

You don't need a gym to stay fit on the road. Resistance bands weigh nothing and fit in your cab — use them for bicep curls, rows, and shoulder presses during breaks. Walk briskly around truck stops for 20-30 minutes after delivering. Bodyweight exercises (push-ups, squats, planks) can be done in 15 minutes beside your truck. Many drivers now carry folding bikes for longer stops.

Eating Healthy at Truck Stops

Invest in a 12V cooler and prepare meals in advance. Grilled chicken, vegetables, fruit, nuts, and whole grain wraps are all road-friendly. At truck stops, choose grilled over fried, skip the fountain drinks, and keep portion sizes reasonable. Hydrate with water — drivers who drink primarily soda and energy drinks report significantly worse energy levels and sleep quality.

Sleep Hygiene

Quality sleep in a sleeper berth requires intention. Use blackout curtains, maintain a consistent sleep schedule even on weekends, keep the cab cool (68-72°F is optimal), and avoid screens for 30 minutes before sleep. If you snore heavily, get tested for sleep apnea — untreated sleep apnea is a leading cause of DOT medical card failures.

Mental Health

Isolation is the #1 mental health challenge for OTR drivers. Stay connected with family through video calls, listen to podcasts or audiobooks, and consider joining trucker community groups. Many carriers now offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) with free counseling services. If you're struggling, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7.
