Most truck drivers overpay on taxes by thousands because they miss legitimate deductions. Whether you're a company driver or owner-operator, these deductions can significantly reduce what you owe.

Per Diem (Company Drivers)

If your company doesn't reimburse per diem, or pays a partial per diem, you may still be able to deduct meal expenses while away from your tax home. The IRS per diem rate for transportation workers is $69/day (2026). For a driver on the road 250 days, that's potentially $17,250 in deductions. Note: the TCJA eliminated the unreimbursed employee expense deduction for W-2 employees through 2025, but check current year rules or if your carrier offers a per diem plan.

Owner-Operator Business Deductions

As a self-employed driver, nearly every business expense is deductible: truck payments (or depreciation if you own it), fuel, insurance, maintenance, tires, ELD subscription, permits, road taxes, IFTA fuel tax, lumper fees, and even truck washes. Keep every receipt — fuel receipts alone can total $60,000-$80,000/year in deductions.

Often-Missed Deductions

Cell phone: The business-use portion of your phone and plan. Laundry: Truck stop laundry expenses while on the road. DOT physical and drug tests: Required for your job, fully deductible. CDL renewal fees: Including endorsement tests. Safety equipment: Gloves, safety vest, hard hat, load bars, straps. GPS/navigation subscriptions. Truck stop showers. Parking fees.

Working with a Tax Professional

Find a tax professional who specializes in trucking — they know deductions general accountants miss. The cost of tax preparation ($200-$500) is itself deductible and typically saves drivers $2,000-$5,000 in additional deductions they would have missed. Keep digital copies of all receipts organized by month.
