Mastering Truck Backing
Backing a tractor-trailer is one of the most challenging skills for new drivers. These tips will help you improve quickly.
General Backing Tips
- GOAL: Get Out And Look - Always check your surroundings
- Use your mirrors constantly
- Make small steering adjustments
- Go slowly - speed is your enemy
- Pull forward to straighten out if needed
Straight Line Backing
Keep your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. Move your hand in the direction you want the trailer to go.
Offset Backing
- Position your trailer at a 45-degree angle
- Turn the wheel toward the offset direction
- Back slowly while watching both mirrors
- Straighten the wheel as the trailer aligns
Practice Makes Perfect
Find an empty parking lot and practice for at least 30 minutes every day. Consistent practice is the key to mastering backing.
